The launch of The Becoming: In Poetic Alchemy took place on Saturday, 4 October, at Thoor Ballylee in Gort – the historic home and enduring symbol of poet William Butler Yeats.
The evening featured a multi-sensory presentation of each of the book’s alchemical stages: Blackening, Whitening, Yellowing, and Reddening.
It began with an immersive video accompanied by an original score by John-Martin Tierney, setting the tone for the night.
Originally scheduled for Friday, the launch was postponed due to the passing of Storm Amy. By Saturday, the skies had cleared, blessing us with a golden sunset and an almost full moon.
The People
The event was warmly opened by James Harrold – artist, arts councillor, patron, and dear friend. Author Julia Monard then spoke about the inspiration behind the work, drawing from alchemy, analytical psychology, and the influence of Yeats himself.
At one charged moment, the lights flickered and went out, heightening the sense of something otherworldly.
Artist Dolores Lyne shared insights on Lady Gregory and her connection to the land in Cluain Duibh, Moycullen, followed by words from the treasurer of the Yeats Thoor Ballylee Society, Rena McAllen. She reflected on the tower’s rich history and the remarkable figures who have passed through its stone walls – among them, the wise woman Biddy Early.
Guests enjoyed beautiful handmade treats by local baker extraordinaire Deirdre Bakes, and the night was captured in stunning photographs by Lakshika Films. Decking the tables and filling the air were Autograph Tree candles, created and supplied by Galway's Cloon Keen perfumer.
